To Start A Week

by Justin Kaiser - Broadcast Mastery

If you’re an independent here are a couple of hard and fast rules to start the week on a high note…

1) Get dressed for work ever morning – even if you only wear shorts and t-shirt.
2) No food in the studio. Coffee, tea and water is still welcome.
3) Check my account regulary to keep on top of current and past due accounts.
4) Make regular “sales calls” to present, past and potential clients.
5) Never let a day go by when you don’t express your gratitude to those around you who help you succeed – be that fellow producers, voice actors, referral sources and clients.

I say “Thank You” with enthusiasm to everyone with whom I work.

And if you ever think you don’t ALWAYS need to say thanks – try finding yourself on the receiving end of someone who never utters it, but always wants your help.

Albert says… “10 or 12 years ago at a station on the East Coast. The GM would say, “I love it when my sales people buy a new car or a house. Debt motivates them to make budget. I took that mantra and applied it to my company. I set a budget for every month based on need, greed, and last year’s determination to succeed. And I bust my bunny-slipper-wearin’ ass to hit it. ”

Starting with point number one above. Get up. Get Dressed.

Thanks for reading.

Gear Head

February 14, 2009

I’m a self-proclaimed gearhead. So after talking about a brand new piece of equipment in the studio I got the following e-mail from someone in our producers bank…
Just out of curiosity, why are so many people so wrapped up in pre-amps and processors? If you have a clean room with well-thought-out acoustic dampening, why [...]

Tough Times???

February 6, 2009

Just got this from Albert from our producers bank…
One thing I am noticing is that there is a lot of talk – but not a lot of action. Many clients are delaying a week – a month because they are not certain. I have to follow up much more than in the past. Which effectively [...]

Production versus Message

April 12, 2008

Do production values count or should we focus on the content.  You wouldn’t believe how many people missed the boat on this question as it was presented to our producers group.  Each is as dependent on the other.  Thanks Roy for helping us wrap up the topic…  Who Really Cares?

There is another factor, however, that [...]

Finding Your Audience’s Emotional Drivers

April 12, 2008

Andrew passed this along to us and he felt that it had some very smart, and obvious observations here that we don’t see often enough.  It’s written to TV promo producers, but the core marketing lessons apply to everyone in and out of radio, too.

Is Radio Dead? Not by a Long Shot!

April 1, 2008

Those people in the podcasting community have suggested for 3 years now that the death of radio is imminent. I’m here to tell you that you are wrong.
Local radio is NOT dead but certainly emerging. The traditional model for music distribution is not dead and there will be some level of co-existence with [...]

Added Value – Interesting Commentary from the NAB

September 9, 2007

I never thought I’d see this from the NAB.   There are still people that do care about producing and writing commercials that work for our clients. Some clusters have just given up. Some just get “it” on.  Radio is hurting right now… economy, war, wall street, bad moon rising over scorpio, whatever.
I care….  I get paid to care [...]

Promotions – 4th of July

January 14, 2007

My Country Tis of Thee
As the Fourth of July draws near, a great way to let listeners voice their independence is to let them call in and give their thoughts on the day. Tape observations, like: “America is great because I have freedom of speech! or “I love this country because of religious freedom. Play [...]
